Audacious is about nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit in Dunedin students. It is not about 'audacious ideas', it is about being Audacious.

What's It All About?

If you are curious about starting a business (now or in the future), or already working on a business idea, Audacious is for you.

Audacious is about being brave enough to take the path less travelled. It is about starting a business, being your own boss, taking a risk, doing what you love and just maybe leaving your mark on the world. It's about considering an alternative to traditional employment and giving you the tools and courage to take control of your future.

Audacious is not just a business competition - it provides an environment that encourages like-minds to meet, mingle, motivate and inspire each other.

What Will I Get Out Of It?

You will gain an understanding of the realities of starting your own business, meet other students interested in starting up and network with fellow entrepreneurs and business people. You'll attend workshops, get advice, and be connected to other support and opportunities for budding entrepreneurs in Dunedin, New Zealand and internationally.

Not only will you develop new fantastic new skills and relationships, it looks great on your CV. If you enter the Challenge, you'll also be in to win cash and prizes to get your business off the ground. What have you got to lose?

Business Community Involvement

Dunedin has an amazing startup culture and a diverse business community, many of which have an export focus so you may not even know they exist. Meet a few of them in the Little Black Book.

Audacious is fortunate to work closely with a wide range of people from the local business community in various ways - as speakers, judges, sponsors and mentors. Audacious is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the local business community, get to know the right people and just maybe launch your very own business right here!

How Does It Work?

The Audacious programme includes Workshops, Reverse Pitching, the Challenge, business coaches and a start-up space for like-minds to meet and mingle. Participants are welcome to take part in as much or as little as they choose - like most things, how much you gain from Audacious depends on how much effort you put in!

The programme is structured around the University and Polytechnic academic calendars and is split into two rounds.

  • Round One is about exploring business problems and solutions. It involves putting together a team, analysing ideas and beginning to communicate your story. If you enter the Challenge, you will be required to submit a brief description of your business idea.
  • Round Two is where Audacious gets serious, with workshops covering topics including business plans, finding finance, and legal issues. Challengers will submit a detailed business plan and pitch their idea to the judges in the Dragon's Den.

Two awards nights are held every year - the Round One awards in May and the final awards in September where we celebrate and reward the very best ideas.

Who Is It For?

Audacious is for current students of all disciplines at the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic - not just business students.

Not a student? Check out the Distiller, 20 LeithBank.

No matter what you study, if you're creative, energetic and keen to expand your horizons - Audacious could be perfect for you. If you are worried you lack business (or other) skills, don't let that put you off, we have students from all disciplines involved in the programme each year.

We encourage those entering the Challenge to do so as part of a team and will assist you in finding team-mates with the skills you need. All Challenge entrants must be current University of Otago or Otago Polytechnic students.
