A high caliber of women were the guest speakers for Workshop 3. Julie Curphey handled Branding, Bex Twemlow, Sales & Pitching and Sophie Barker, Competitor Analysis.
With these highly rated speakers, we thought the students, who had been coming in numbers for the first two Workshops, would also come to this one. Little did we know, just 20 came to this one after twice that number at Workshop 2 and equally high numbers for Workshop 1.
Over the three workshops, we feel that the last one worked best in terms of exchange between students and speakers. Questions could be asked after the presentation and afterwards in relaxed small groups surrounding the speaker.
The students who were there benefited well and were showing a lot of interest towards our great speakers. As you can see in the photo gallery, below, all three speakers had slides supporting their presentations visually and their oral presentations were excellent.
Julie Curphey started the presentations with Branding and with her wide experience covered the topic and also explained the difference between Branding and Marketing. Once you have established your brand, marketing comes in, as everything you do to support that brand.
Bex Twemlow followed Julie as speaker and she spoke about Sales and Pitching a topic she knew very well experiencing it every day as MD of Firebrand. If one of her recommendations should stand out, it was the proof, i.e. statistics showing, as an example, that 86% of people use purple shampoo if they have blond hair is a very strong positive argument for purple shampoo.
Sophie Barker presented Competitor Analysis, and it is a topic that she knows well and that she applies in her job as Marketing Manager at the Otago Peninsula Trust. A few ideas that stood out were: is there room for your product in the market? What are your advantages? Do a lot of research on Google, an example being: what is the next big trend?
At the end of the presentations, the students had the opportunity to sit down with a speaker of their choice and have an hour's long question and answer session.
We left H603 for the last time this term.
